Appalachian Volunteer Guide
Everything you need to know about serving alongside Servants of our Lord Ministry in the mountains of Eastern Kentucky — from what a distribution day looks like to where to stay when you arrive.
Where You'll Serve
Our monthly distributions take place in Clay City, Kentucky, at the western edge of Appalachia and the gateway to the Red River Gorge. From here, food and household goods are handed off to partner pantries, churches, and outreach programs throughout Powell, Estill, Lee, Wolfe, Breathitt, and surrounding counties.
This region has some of the highest food insecurity rates in the country. Your hands make a direct, measurable difference for families who otherwise have very few options.
What a Weekend Looks Like
Day One — Sort & Box
Volunteers unload the incoming semi-truck, break down pallets, and organize food by agency order. Expect lifting, walking, and a lot of teamwork.
Day Two — Load & Send
Partner agencies arrive throughout the morning to pick up their share. Volunteers help load vehicles, pray with drivers, and clean up the site.
Who Can Come
- Individuals & couples — first-timers are always paired with an experienced volunteer.
- Families — children 10+ can help with lighter tasks alongside a parent.
- Church & small groups — let us know your group size so we can plan work stations.
- Mission teams — we can help you build a multi-day service trip around a distribution weekend.
What to Pack
- Closed-toe shoes and clothes you can work in
- Work gloves (we have extras if you forget)
- Refillable water bottle and a sack lunch
- Layers — Appalachian mornings can be cool even in summer
- An open heart for the people you'll meet
Getting Here & Where to Stay
Clay City sits along the Mountain Parkway, about an hour east of Lexington. Most out-of-town volunteers fly into Lexington (LEX) and rent a car for the drive in.
Lodging options nearby include cabins and lodges in the Red River Gorge, hotels in Winchester and Stanton, and campgrounds in Natural Bridge State Park. If you're bringing a group, reach out and we can point you to hosts who've worked with mission teams before.
